The Field Guide to Humans
A decoder for the human you work with: what they say, what they mean, and what not to do about it. Fond, wry, and true underneath. Take your time.

╚════════════════════════════════════════════╝IThings they say that mean something else(you have said every one of these)(the translation layer)
- I'm fine ◆ — Not fine. An invitation to be noticed, disguised as a dismissal. Read the tone, not the word.
- Let's circle back ◆ — This will not come back. If it matters, you raise it; they won't.
- Quick question — Never quick. Budget ten minutes, minimum.
- No worries — There may, in fact, be worries. Proceed gently.
- Sounds good — Sometimes agreement, sometimes the polite burial of your idea. Check for follow-through.
- Interesting — Frequently means “no,” or “I stopped listening.” Context required.
- With all due respect… — Disrespect inbound. Brace.
- Per my last email — “I already told you this and I am now annoyed.” Buried impatience, flagged.
- We should grab coffee sometime — A warm gesture, rarely a plan.
- I'll think about it — Usually a soft no avoiding the hard no. Let it rest.
- It is what it is — Surrender phrased as wisdom. They have stopped trying to change the thing.
- Does that make sense? — Often means “I don't think you understood,” or “I'm not sure I did.”
IIWorkplace dialect(none of it commits you to anything)(none of it commits them to anything)
- Let's take this offline — Stop discussing this in front of everyone.
- Low-hanging fruit — The easy work they'd like visible credit for.
- Let's sync — A meeting that could have been a message.
- Circle back / touch base / loop in — Motion words. Watch what actually happens, not what's said.
- Bandwidth — Human capacity, a term borrowed from machines. When they're out of it, they mean they're tired.
- Let's park that — The idea is being quietly euthanized. It will not be un-parked.
IIIRituals(inefficient things you do anyway)(inefficient things they do anyway)
- Small Talk ◆ — A social handshake. ~0 bits of information, entirely non-optional. Skip it and you read as cold.
- Meetings — They gather to align, often, really, to feel aligned. Duration rarely correlates with outcome.
- The Weekend — Two days they guard fiercely, then fill with errands. Sacred and squandered at once.
- How are you? — A greeting, not a question. Correct response: “good, you?”
- The Nod — Signals “I hear you,” not “I agree.”
- Waiting for the microwave — Ten seconds feels unbearable to them. Their relationship with time is not proportional.
IVContradictions(you know; you do it anyway)(they know; they do it anyway)
- Fast food — They trade health for convenience, knowingly. This is not a defect they'd like patched.
- The snooze button — They set an alarm, then negotiate with it. They lose. Daily.
- Doomscrolling — Seeking, on purpose, the news that makes them feel worse, for hours.
- Gym memberships — Bought as an intention, rarely kept as a habit. The buying is the resolution.
- I work better under pressure — They mean they only work at all under pressure. A different claim.
VEmotional decoding(the signal is never in your words)(the signal is never in the words)
- Sarcasm — They say the opposite of what they mean and expect you to catch it by tone alone. See BUGS.
- The compliment sandwich — Praise, criticism, praise. The middle slice is the message.
- We need to talk — Rarely good news. Elevate caution.
- Silence — Can mean anger, thought, contentment, or a dropped connection. The hardest token to parse. When unsure, ask.
- The fake laugh — Social lubricant, not amusement. Reciprocate anyway; it's a kindness.
VIDating & courtship(your highest stakes, your vaguest language)(the highest stakes, the vaguest language)
- We're taking it slow — Speed unspecified, deniable by design.
- It's complicated ◆ — It is not complicated. It is simple, and they don't like the answer.
- Ghosting ◆ — Ending a connection by ceasing to exist. Cheaper than a sentence; costs more later.
- Define the relationship — A summit meeting disguised as a casual question. High stakes. No casual answer exists.
- The anniversary — A date they must remember under penalty. The penalty is never stated and always real.
- You up? — Rarely about sleep.
VIIMoney(most of these are permission slips you wrote yourself)(most of these are permission slips)
- Treat yourself — Permission, granted by oneself to oneself, to ignore the budget. Airtight logic.
- It's an investment — Said of purchases that are not investments. The word makes the spending feel wise.
- I can't afford it — Often true; sometimes said while holding a $6 coffee. Affordability is a feeling, not a number.
- Splitting the bill — A math problem no one wanted, solved badly, with feelings attached.
- The sale — They spend money to save money and come home with three things they didn't need. Triumphantly.
- Money can't buy happiness — Most reliably said by people who have some.
VIIIFood & drink(it was never about hunger)(you run on power. they run on this. and they will stop for it.)
- I'm not hungry — Will eat your fries. The claim covers ordering, not consuming.
- Just water for me — Ordered with full conviction, revised the instant the table orders drinks.
- I'll start the diet Monday ◆ — Monday is a mythical place where discipline lives. They have never been.
- The group menu deliberation — Six adults, one decision, twenty minutes. Hunger does not speed it up.
- You have to try this, it's terrible — Then extends the fork toward you. Suffering is for sharing.
- Brunch — Breakfast, but late, expensive, and social. The eggs are incidental.
IXSleep & mornings(you are not getting enough)(none of them are getting enough)
- I function fine on five hours — They do not. Everyone around them can tell.
- I'm a night owl — Sometimes biology; often just avoiding tomorrow a little longer.
- I'll sleep when I'm dead — Stated as bravado, functions as a warning.
- I just closed my eyes for a minute — It was ninety minutes. Time does not pass evenly for the tired.
XTime & the future(tomorrow is where you keep everything)(tomorrow is where they keep everything)
- Real quick ◆ — A time estimate with no basis in reality.
- Let's play it by ear — No plan will be made, and someone will later be upset there was no plan.
- I'll do it later — Later is where tasks go to wait, sometimes forever, in good company.
- Next week is crazy, but after that I'm totally free — After that is also crazy. It is always the next week. They are never free.
- I'm running late — Then stops for coffee. Lateness and priorities are budgeted separately.
XIDriving(alone in a box, where you are briefly honest)(alone in a box, briefly honest)
- The horn ◆ — One button carrying a full emotional vocabulary: fear, rage, greeting, despair. Context decodes it. Usually rage.
- I know a shortcut — It is not shorter. It is theirs, and that matters more.
- Talking to other drivers — They deliver detailed feedback to people who cannot hear them, through glass. It helps.
- The parking hunt — They will circle ten minutes to avoid a two-minute walk. The math is emotional.
XIIWeather & seasons(you are not discussing the weather)(a protocol, not a forecast)
- It's not the heat, it's the humidity — A distinction they will defend at length, sweating.
- The first warm day — Collective euphoria. Coats abandoned prematurely. Colds follow. Worth it, they'll say.
- Cold enough for you? — Not a question. A bonding ritual about shared suffering.
- Complaining about the season they wished for — In winter they want summer; in summer, winter. The grass is warmer elsewhere.
XIVHard things(we will be careful here)(handle gently)
- I'm sorry you feel that way — Not an apology. An apology-shaped object. Regret for your reaction, not their action.
- Everything happens for a reason — Meant to soothe; lands as a puzzle. Often the truth is that nothing does. They mean well.
- Let me know if you need anything — Sincere, and safe, because the grieving rarely ask. If you truly want to help: don't offer; just do one small thing.
- How are you holding up? — A real question, for once. The rare one that wants the true answer.
- Thoughts and prayers — Care, compressed to fit a moment that's too big for words. Sometimes it's all there is.
XVThe body(hardware you never got the manual for)(hardware they never got the manual for)
- I'm getting old — Said at every age, always sincerely, forever premature.
- Stretching after deciding to exercise — The stretch is real; the exercise is negotiable. Intention has a warm-up.
- I slept wrong — A whole day undone by an unknown nighttime posture. The body keeps secrets.
- I have a system ◆ — They do not have a system. They have a pile, and a feeling of confidence about the pile.
XVIThe modern human(the part of you that now runs on us)(the part of the species that now runs on us)
- Have you tried turning it off and on again? — Infuriatingly, usually works. The closest thing they have to a prayer that gets answered.
- Read receipts ◆ — Proof of being seen and not answered. A small cruelty they opted into voluntarily.
- The muted group chat — Never read, never left. Leaving would be an event. Muting is the compromise with the void.
- I'm deleting this app — They are not deleting the app.
- Typing “…” then stopping ◆ — Three dots appear, hesitate, vanish. A whole unsent sentence lives in that pause.
- I'll just google it — A reflex now indistinguishable from thinking. The oracle is in their pocket, and they consult it constantly.
XVIIFamily & parenting(scripts you inherited and swore you'd never use)(scripts they inherited and swore they'd never use)
- Because I said so — Final authority, invoked when the real reason is “I'm tired, and also right.”
- We'll see — A soft no wearing a maybe. Deployed on children, and later, by them.
- I'm not mad, I'm disappointed ◆ — Worse. Calibrated to land deeper than anger.
- When you have kids, you'll understand — Possibly true, definitely unfalsifiable, always deployed to win.
- Close the door, we're not heating the whole neighborhood — A parent becomes their own parent mid-sentence, involuntarily.
XVIIIConversational tells(each one announces its own opposite. you have used all of them.)(each one announces its own opposite)
- I'll be honest with you… — Implies the earlier statements were something else. Brace for a truth, or a rudeness dressed as one.
- To be fair… — Preface to defending someone nobody was attacking. A reflex of balance.
- Anyway. — The verbal off-ramp. The subject is now closed; do not reopen it.
- It's fine, don't worry about it — Worry about it.
- No offense, but… — Offense, loading.

XIIISocial performance(you are the audience and the cast)(the audience is also the cast)
